Published: 2026-07-21 | By SEASONS Wellness

What Is Qigong?

Qigong (Qi Gong) is an ancient Chinese practice that combines gentle movement, breathing, and focused intention to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy. The word translates to "energy work" or "energy skill." With over 4,000 years of history, qigong is one of the five pillars of Traditional Chinese Medicine, alongside acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and tuina massage.

For beginners, the breathing component is the foundation. Before learning complex movements, mastering the breath is essential.

The Three Pillars of Qigong

  1. Body (Tiao Shen): Proper posture and alignment
  2. Breath (Tiao Xi): Slow, deep, abdominal breathing
  3. Mind (Tiao Xin): Focused attention and intention

Essential Qigong Breathing Techniques

1. Natural Abdominal Breathing (Zi Ran Hu Xi)

This is the foundation of all qigong breathing:

Instructions:

  1. Sit or stand comfortably with the spine straight
  2. Place one hand on the abdomen, below the navel
  3. Place the other hand on the chest
  4. Inhale slowly through the nose for 4 counts, allowing the lower abdomen to expand (the lower hand rises)
  5. Exhale slowly through the nose for 6 counts, allowing the abdomen to contract
  6. Keep the chest relatively still
  7. Practice for 5-10 minutes

Benefits: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowers heart rate, reduces anxiety, gathers Qi in the Lower Dantian (the body's energy center below the navel).

2. Reverse Abdominal Breathing (Ni Fu Hu Xi)

An intermediate technique that enhances energy circulation:

Instructions:

  1. Start in the same position as above
  2. Inhale through the nose for 4 counts, gently drawing the abdomen IN
  3. Exhale through the nose for 6 counts, gently pushing the abdomen OUT
  4. This is the reverse of natural breathing
  5. Practice for 3-5 minutes only

Benefits: Increases energy, strengthens the core, enhances Qi circulation. Do not practice if you feel dizzy.

3. The Cleansing Breath (Tu Na)

A purifying breath that clears stagnant energy:

Instructions:

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart
  2. Inhale deeply through the nose, visualizing clean, white energy entering
  3. Exhale forcefully through the mouth with a "ha" sound
  4. Visualize gray, stale energy leaving the body
  5. Repeat 9-18 times

Benefits: Clears negative energy, oxygenates the blood, releases tension from the Lungs.

4. The Microcosmic Orbit (Xiao Zhou Tian)

A meditation that circulates Qi through the two main meridians:

Instructions:

  1. Sit comfortably with tongue resting gently behind the upper front teeth
  2. Inhale through the nose, visualizing energy rising from the perineum up the spine to the crown of the head (Governor Vessel)
  3. Exhale, feeling energy flow from the crown down the front of the body back to the perineum (Conception Vessel)
  4. Continue for 10-20 minutes

Benefits: Balances Yin and Yang, harmonizes all meridians, deepens meditation.

5. The Healing Sound Breath (Liu Zi Jue)

Six healing sounds corresponding to organ systems:
